Salaried and Non-Union Hourly Employees: Benefits* are effective the first of the month after, or on the same day as your hire date, provided you enroll within 30 days of your hire date. Example: If you are hired April 10, your benefits are effective May 1 provided you enroll by May 10.
* Certain waiting periods may apply for short-and long-term disability and voluntary benefits.
Be sure to make your benefit elections within 30 days of your hire date; otherwise, your next opportunity to enroll will be during the annual enrollment period.
- STEP 1: Carefully review this website and become informed about your benefit plans and choices.
- STEP 2: Be prepared with the names, addresses, dates of birth and social security numbers of the individuals who you plan on enrolling for coverage, or naming as a beneficiary.
- STEP 3: Complete your enrollment online using the PlanSource Enrollment System. You can also enroll by phone at 1-877-435-0260. To enroll online:

Dependent coverage (for spouse or children), if elected, begins at the same time your employee coverage begins. You may be required to provide proof of your dependent’s eligibility (such as a marriage or birth certificate) to Barnes, if requested.
- For additional information about dependent eligibility, visit the Eligibility page.
If you miss your enrollment deadline or do not actively enroll within the required 30 days (after date of hire), you will receive only the Core benefits provided by the Company (Basic Life, AD&D insurance, Short-Term Disability, Core Long-Term Disability, Health Advocacy and Employee Assistance Program [EAP]) until the next annual Open Enrollment, unless you have a Qualified Event/Family Status Change during the year.
The benefits you choose will remain in effect from the date of your eligibility through December 31 of the calendar year. After you enroll, you will be able to make changes to your benefit selections ONLY if you have a qualified life event during the year. Your next opportunity to make changes will be during Open Enrollment for the next plan year.
Within 7-10 business days of the end of your New Hire Enrollment period, you will receive a written confirmation statement of your benefit elections in the mail. We strongly encourage you to review your confirmation. If any of the information or benefits are not accurate, please contact your HR Manager to arrange for changes as soon as possible.
If you enroll in medical coverage under the Barnes plans, you should expect to receive your medical and prescription ID card within two weeks. Your medical and Rx benefit will be on one combined ID card. Please show these cards to your health care providers and pharmacy on your next visit.
